Thunderstorms hit Kent overnight with heavy rain and lightning seen across county and forecasters say more is expected today

Thunder and lightning swept across the county last night and more is due today.

After days of sunshine and blue skies, storms hit the county last night with Dover and Folkestone seeing some of the worst conditions according to lightningmaps.org.

Similar weather is expected today, with the Met Office issuing yellow warnings for thunderstorms across Kent and the majority of England and Wales until midnight.

There is also warnings of heavy showers, with up to 80mm expected to fall this afternoon and forecasters say people should expect sudden flooding and possible road closures.

Cancelled train and bus services are expected, with further potential power cuts also predicted.

Grahame Madge, for the Met Office, said: “Some of the storms have the potential to be quite intense, with high rainfall rates.”
