Suspicious blaze in historic church

A 13th century church has been damaged by a fire that police are treating as suspicious.

Crews were also called to a fire in St Mary and St Eanswythe Church in Folkestone after the blaze had started in the vestry at 5.30am.

Twenty firefighters tackled the fire and managed to contain it in the vestry.

Initial investigations show that the church was broken into and an unknown quantity of cash from collecting boxes has been stolen.

Police think the fire was started deliberately.
