Sittingbourne boss Joe Dowley plays down fears of Ryman League Division 1 South relegation battle

Sittingbourne manager Joe Dowley believes his squad are good enough to avoid being dragged into a Ryman League, Division 1 South relegation scrap.

Three successive defeats have seen the Brickies drop to 18th and Dowley’s frustration has been compounded by a lack of football due to two postponements, while Saturday’s game against Croydon Athletic is also off after they dropped out of the league.

It means only one team could be relegated this season, with Whyteleafe – 12 points behind Bourne – favourites.

The Brickies will not have kicked a ball in anger for nearly a month when they travel to Crawley Down on Saturday week and Dowley (pictured) admits the league table has provided a reality check for his players.

He said: "It has hit home to a few of them how low we are but they are aware of it now. We need a few points but we are better than our league position suggests."

Bourne’s re-arranged game against Corinthian Casuals, frozen off on February 4, goes ahead on Tuesday for their first match at Bourne Park for more than a month.

The Brickies have also moved quickly to re-arrange last weekend’s trip to Hythe, which was postponed 24 hours early on Friday. The game will now be played on Tuesday, March 13 (7.45pm).
