Salute to the Forties

Dockyard visitors were taken back in time this weekend to wartime Britain for the Salute to the Forties event.

Vintage vehicles were on display and historic costumes dusted off and worn to entertain in the brilliant late summer sun.

Once through the ticket office you were suddenly immersed in the 1940s.

The annual Salute to the Forties wartime weekend is proving to be one of the most popular events on the Dockyard’s calendar. Hundreds of visitors were able to soak up brilliant late summer sunshine as well as the increasingly popular 1940s culture.

Many were dressed for the occasion. Men and women sported Second World War uniforms. Shapeless British serge battledress stood alongside its more elegant American counterpart.

Many of the women had adopted the classic 1940s attire of print house coat, a turban to protect that crimped permanent wave, and – oooh, those wrinkled stockings.

Military vehicles, from jeeps to small tanks were on display, together with civilian Austin Sevens and Standard Tens, shining like they never did back in the war years.
