Reveller's dip almost ends in tragedy

Don't drink and dive - the stark warning from coastguards in Thanet after one reveller's Folk Week celebrations almost turned to tragedy.

Concerned passers-by in Broadstairs alerted the emergency services on Sunday evening after spotting a man drowning in the harbour.

The man was pulled from the water within minutes and ambulance crews resuscitated him at the scene.

Local coastguard Pete Overton said: "This man had been drinking all day at Folk Week and it was touch and go for a while.

"Once you start getting water into your mouth, the body goes into a reflex state and if you’re not conscious, you slip under the water.

"When it’s nice and sunny and you’ve had a couple of drinks, it’s so tempting to go for a refreshing dip. All too often, though, that has tragic consequences."

The incident in Broadstairs comes just days after a man in his thirties died while on a stag party in Brighton.

He died on Saturday after being rescued from rough seas close to the city's Palace Pier.
