It happened at around 8am on the London-bound carriageway between junctions 12 and 13.

Boxes of canned and bottled Budweiser, Carlsberg and Guinness bit the dust.

At 10.30am, a police spokesman said: "The load is believed to be bottles of beer, which have smashed.

"The London-bound carriageway remains closed as the road is cleared of debris.

"There are long delays in the area, of up to an hour, and drivers are being advised to find alternative routes."

Lane one has reopened on the coast-bound carriageway. There are no reports of any injuries.
