Kent's poor start to the season continued when they slipped to a six-wicket defeat in the Clydesdale Bank 40 League against Warwickshire Bears at Edgbaston on Sunday.

The unbeaten Group C leaders eased home with five overs to spare, after being set 193 to win, but it could have much worse for the Spitfires who were 50-5 and 70-7 at one stage. They were rescued by an eighth-wicket stand of 94 in 17 overs between skipper Rob Key (87) and Rob Ferley (52), the spin bowler's best one day score for six years.

Key hit 10 fours in his 98-ball knock, while Ferley (pictured) stayed 72 minutes facing 66 deliveries, hitting five fours, passing his previous best made against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 2004.

Darren Maddy finally ended Key’s resistance having him caught at extra-cover, and then snapped up Ferley in the final over.

Seamer Boyd Rankin did the early damage for Warwickshire. The Irishman ripped through the Kent middle-order, dismissing Geraint Jones (12), Darren Stevens and Alex Blake - playing his first game of the season - both for nought in the same over. He also sent back Azhar Mahmood for another duck, and Simon Cook (9) to record career-best one-day figures of 4-34.

Bears made a quick start with Ian Bell, scoring his fourth 50 in the competition this season, and Maddy (43 not out), guiding the home side to their third win over Kent in as many weeks.
