Injury risk greater in schools

Working in schools is the most likely to lead to employment injury according to Bexley council’s statistics.

Occupational health incident figures show that from October to December 2007, out of 123 employee incidents, 90 of them took place in schools.

The most common occurrence was violence and assault (36), followed by struck by object (18) and other (12).

Those placed under the other category included being run into by children and a driver ignoring a school crossing patrol sign.

The next occupation in the table of health and safety incidents was Bexley Trading Services with 11, followed by Children and Young People’s Services with nine and then Environment and Regeneration Services with eight.

The Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) had two incidents, one of which was one involving glass and “sharps”, and the other violence and assault.

Social and Community Services, Adult Education College Bexley and Corporate Services Group each had one reported.

Overall the number of incidents have dropped, compared to the same period in 2006 when there were a total of 133.

In schools there was little change in the number, going down by one, but they were nearly halved in Bexley Trading Services, dropping from 20, and there were four fewer incidents at Adult Education College Bexley.
