KENT Institute of Directors has resumed its search for a new boss to replace Jill Cochrane, the businesswoman and television presenter, after her nominated successor unexpectedly pulled out.

Cliff Hardcastle, founder and former chairman of Densitron Technologies, Biggin Hill, was due to take over in May, and was even introduced as chairman-designate at a recent IoD dinner in Maidstone. However, after his surprise removal from the Densitron board, Mr Hardcastle announced that he was giving up the role.

Mr Hardcastle, who has a 25 per cent stake in the company he founded 30 years ago, was shocked by Densitron's decision. He said immediately afterwards that he wanted to regain control of the company. But a number of other substantial shareholders were unhappy with the hi-tech firm's share performance.

Mr Hardcastle said he was sorry to give up the IoD position. "This was a hard decision but recent events have taken up a lot of time which has prevented me from being as involved as I wanted to be in the run up to this important job. I wish the branch all the best in its continued development."

Jill Cochrane, who will complete three years in the voluntary role in May, said she was disappointed that the branch would be deprived of "Cliff's extensive business experience and good sense but we understand the decision and wish him well."

Kent IoD is now searching urgently for a strong candidate among its 2,200 members to take over the high-profile role.
