Gills trail after tame opening period

Gillingham 0 Chesterfield 1

CHESTERFIELD lead Gillingham 1-0 at the break at Priestfield this afternoon.

In a first half short of incident the visitors took the lead in the 39th minute when Mark Hughes' 25-yard effort was deflected past Kelvin Jack.

The Gills had nearly fallen behind on 18 minutes when Jack failed to claim a Kevan Hurst corner, but the keeper's blushes were spared when Colin Larkin fired over from close range.

Chesterfield keeper Barry Roche had to be alert to push away Gary Mulligan's effort early on.

Gillingham: Jack, Jupp, Cox, Johnson, Easton, Bentley, Crofts, Flynn, Jarvis, Mulligan, Ndumbu-Nsungu.
Subs: Sancho, Chorley, Pouton, Savage, McDonald.
