Nicky Southall got his first run-out on Saturday since returning to his home-town club.

Southall, pictured, now player-coach at Priestfield, played the final 20 minutes at Calais in his first Gills appearance since May 2009's League 2 play-off semi-final.

Boss Andy Hessenthaler admitted that the introduction, however, wasn’t planned.

"Barry Fuller had picked up a booking and we had used all of our subs so I told him to get his shirt on," explained the Gills boss.

"It was a wind-up to start with. He went to get his gear and then I said, ‘no, I’m only joking’, and he wasn’t happy with me!

"We did put him on though just to give Barry a rest more than anything. Again, he (Fuller) was on a booking and we didn’t want anything silly to happen."
