Promotion is close but Gills boss Martin Allen isn’t reaching for the Champagne just yet.

A win on Saturday will all-but clinch a place back in League 1 but there is still work to do.

Torquay – the only team to have beaten the Gills away from home this season – head to Priestfield with Football League survival on their agenda and they won’t make life easy for Allen’s men.

The Gills boss said: "Torquay have beaten us already this season and so we know they are a dangerous team.

"They are good and it’s important everyone keeps their feet on the ground until that Fat Lady is singing. We just have to keep doing our jobs."

Allen has kept away from the hype surrounding the what-ifs all season but he knows how close the Gills are to claiming the third of chairman Paul Scally’s four targets – the final one being the title.

He said: "It’s going to be exciting and I do know exactly how many points we’ve got and I do know exactly how many all the other teams have got but I never allow it to come into my thinking or my thought process."

The Gills came through a busy Easter with four points and show no signs of slowing down.

And Allen pointed to the hard work done behind the scenes as the reason behind their unrelenting pursuit of success this season.

He said: "I have always said we don’t get tired and we don’t do long journeys. We just do journeys. We don’t get tired, we recover.

"We graft and are full on – that’s why we are top of the league. We do it right, do it properly, keep going and don’t let our standards drop."
