There is plenty to do for the children throughout half term once the holiday weekend is over.

Learn to race where F1 stars Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton learned to hone their skills at two turn up and drive sessions. Four to seven-year-olds can race around the 120m mini GP circuit, while eight to 11-year-olds can take on the longer 300m Club circuit. Those aged 12 to 16 can ride 40mph petrol karts on the National Circuit, which is also used for adult sessions.

When: Turn up and drive for all ages on Tuesday, June 5. For under-16s only on Friday, June 8

Diggerland, strood

Test your co-ordination and nerve at Dumper Truck Racing, where each competitor takes part in at least two race heats against the clock and your competitors, with the fastest times qualifying to reach the grand final. This is popular so booking is essential. Visitors can also try the 90 minute driving experience on a JCB 3CX backhoe loader. Drive the digger, dig holes and backfill them.

Dover Castle

Patrolling air raid wardens mix with the hubbub of washday and ration queues as the castle steps back into the 1940s for World War II Weekend. The drama of life in a county coping with war is brought to the fore with the Ministry of Food giving austerity cooking demonstrations with rations. Soldiers and medical staff will be quartered in tents with their equipment, weapons and vehicles on show, including an original 1938 RAF staff car. A full-size Spitfire replica takes centre stage in the airfield. Then visitors must take cover for the outbreak of a Second World War battle re-enactment, featuring the 56th independent infantry brigade 2nd battalion Essex Regiment. Children’s drill will keep youngsters on their toes and they can find out how to salute an officer.

Drusillas Park, East Sussex

For the first time at Drusillas, Fireman Sam will introduce the audience to life in Pontypandy. After his show, children can meet their hero at meet and greet sessions that run throughout the day.

Farming World, Faversham

A whole array of events have been planned to keep everyone entertained. Start the week with a picnic in the park to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. Kids can get in for free if they dress up as a king or queen and are accompanied by a paying adult. Also running will be sheep shearing and wool week where families can watch the sheep being sheared and follow the progress of wool turning into woolly jumpers. There is also a chance to join in with creepy crawly day when the farm is visited by a variety of snakes, spiders and reptiles. Spongebob Squarepants is also planning a visit during the week so you could catch up with him too! Have a go falconry day gives you the chance to get your hands on some birds of prey with the farm’s resident falconer Sharon Hollens. The adventure playground, indoor soft play barn and the jumping pillows ensure that there’s always something to do. Heavy horses, friendly farm animals including peacocks, llamas and alpacas, birds of prey and bees at Bee World are all on show throughout the week as well.

Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Park

At Port Lympne, children must become detectives and uncover clues to find out where animals have gone throughout June. Self-guided trails, quizzes and talks will reveal the whereabouts of some of the park’s residents as part of the Kids on the Case theme. Communications manager Carole Thomas said: “June’s theme is close to our hearts as we are just about to embark on a major project to send captive born primates back to the wild. The quizzes and trails are a fun way to highlight the importance of the conservation work that we do here in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation.” Meanwhile at Howletts, trails will show how gibbons swing and the anteaters knuckle walk during the park’s Do The Locomotion Month, examining how animals move.

Historic Dockyard, Chatham

Aspiring sailors can test their sea legs on board HMS Cavalier. They can hear the boom of her guns, fired by the Heritage Naval Gun Crew, then join them on deck for some costumed reenactments. They can also see the captain issuing charges and punishment to the ship’s company. Also running at the Dockyard will be Shipwrecks and Rescues Week, marking the heroics of the RNLI with details the dramatic tales of disastrous shipwrecks and gallant missions to save stricken vessels. Information panels will tell the story of real life rescues and families can make their own lifeboat to test out in a stormy sea simulation tank in the No1 Smithery. There’s also the chance to try medal making, take the seagull trail and meet Stormy Stan, the RNLI’s mascot.

When: HMS Cavalier all day from Saturday, June 2 to Sunday, June 10. Shipwrecks and Rescues from 11am to 4pm from Tuesday, June 5 to Sunday, June 10.

Hop Farm Family Park

Jack and the Beanstalk Week sees children playing giant beanstalk hopscotch and being jumping beans on the giant jumping pillows. Children who come as their favourite storybook character can win a prize in the best dressed competition. There is also the children’s driving school, which has taken on an F1 theme and Farmer Jack’s Magic Bean Factory, as well as the animal farm.

Poulton Wood, Aldington

Run by the Canterbury Oast Trust, Poulton Wood is the designated nature reserve of the Rare Breeds Centre near Woodchurch. Each year it has its open day, showing off crafts and woodland skills in the woodland setting. Native American storytellers will impart their wisdom and there will be a barbecue, wood turning and plant sales. Morris dancers will skip to folk music and working horses will be on show as well as birds of prey.
