The festive spirit is alive and well in Faversham this year as a chippie in the town is set to open its doors on Christmas Day to give free food to those in need.

Raj Bains, who owns Mr Cod in Lower Road, Ospringe, willl be opening the shop from 11am-1pm, when he will welcome homeless people, the elderly and the lonely.

Mr Bains got the idea after years of inviting an elderly neighbour to Christmas dinner at his house.

He said: "It got me thinking there were probably more people out there in need.

"I can’t invite everyone back to my house but I can at least open my door for them. It’s what Christmas is all about, not toys and presents."

This year will be the second time the shop has opened for Christmas and Mr Bains won't be alone behind the counter, as his staff have offered to help out.

The fish and chips will be cooked to order and Mr Bains has urged people to come in and take food to people they feel are most in need.

He added: "It will be good to know I've done something special for someone, especially at Christmas time."
