Driver hurt as boys throw missile from bridge

TWO boys who threw an object from a footbridge carried out a “reckless act of vandalism” which could have cost a life, say Kent Police.

The boys, thought to be aged between 10 and 12, threw the object from the footbridge over Ito Way, Gillingham. It smashed the windscreen of a car, injuring the woman driver.

She received treatment at hospital where it was confirmed that she had a small piece of glass in her eye.

The incident happened at about 2.30pm on Friday when a 36-year-old woman was driving her silver coloured Toyota Corolla along Ito Way.

Police say that after the windscreen was shattered the car became undriveable. They would would like to trace two or three boys who were seen in the area at the time and who were riding push bikes. One of the bikes is believed to be yellow.

PC Craig West said: “This was a totally reckless act of vandalism, that could have quite easily resulted in a fatal or serious injury, not only to the driver of the car but also other road users.

“ The windscreen was totally smashed putting glass into the face of the driver. In addition to the driver receiving an injury to her eye, there were also three young children in the car who were traumatised by the event.

“Such behaviour is totally unacceptable and we would urge anyone who may have information to come forward and speak to the police before these children have an opportunity to repeat their actions which could quite well end in someone being killed.”

Anyone who may have seen something or who may have information in connection with this incident is asked to contact Medway Police on 01634 884252 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. All calls to Crimestoppers are free and are treated in the strictest of confidence.
