You almost expect Bruce Willis to lift his head, walking on the surface of the moon in 1998 blockbuster Armageddon.

Yet the desolate landscape this crew walk across is Dungeness and their vessel is not a lunar landing craft but one of the RNLI’s vital lifeboats.

The picture was taken last month, moments after a storm off the coast of the beach at Kent’s most southerly town, officially classified as the UK’s only desert.

Budding boatsmen young and old and spirited seafarers can see what the team gets up to at the RNLI Dungeness open day on Sunday, August 5.

See the Dungeness RNLI Lifeboat Pride and Spirit launched at about 1.30pm and take a look at the fundraising stalls.

There will be lots of ice cream, refreshments and candy floss for children, plus the chance to play games like hook the duck.

Make a day of it on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, who will be making stops opposite the boathouse throughout the day and travelling the full distance of the line to Hythe.

Open day admission free. Runs from 10am to 4pm. Visitwww.dungenesslifeboat.org.uk

A Romney Rover ticket on RHDR, giving unlimited travel on the steam railway at all stops, all day, costs £15, seniors £13, children £7.50. Visitwww.rhdr.org.uk
