A campaigning lollipop lady is appealing for a 'lollicam' to help crack down on dangerous driving outside the school she patrols.

Sylvia Everest wants Kent County Council (KCC) to give her an £800 camera before someone is seriously injured or killed on the crossing at Queenborough Road, Halfway, Sheppey.

She protects children on their way to and from Halfway Houses Primary School. The cameras are fixed into lollipop signs and are currently on trial in Yorkshire.

Mrs Everest said: "It can be such a scary job and I have been doing it for 20 years – but it doesn’t scare me. I’m acting on behalf of all the lollipop people around the country who regularly take the law into their hands when they stop traffic."

A KCC spokesman said: "School crossing patrols play an important role in keeping children safe. There are strict national guidelines on the equipment they use and we look forward to the findings of pilot schemes such as this."
