Chairman Paul Scally insists League 2 title is still a realistic target for Gillingham

Gillingham head into Saturday's game against Torquay 11 points off the top of npower League 2, but chairman Paul Scally hasn’t given up on the title.

Mr Scally, pictured, started the season insisting promotion was the Gills’ only goal this term and, despite a stop-start opening few months, he’s not willing to accept second best.

He said: "It’s not about where we are now, it’s where we are at the end of the season that counts.

"We knew it was going to be a tough division to get out of, we’ve been in it long enough in the club’s history. What is good is that Andy Hessenthaler has got together a nucleus of a good team now.

"The performance at Port Vale showed they are capable of getting over downs and putting on some decent performances. We’ve got some capable players.

"We are a quarter into the season, four points off the play-offs and 11 off the top so we have 11 points to catch up and that’s what the players will be focusing on.

"They won’t be focusing on four points to get into the play-offs, they’ll be wanting 11 points to catch Chesterfield (the leaders)."
