Bid to head off firefighters' strike

FIREFIGHTERS in Kent and their colleagues across the country were today awaiting the outcome of a last-minute offer to increase their pay to at least £25,000 a year.

Local authority employers have made the offer in a bid to head off an eight-day strike due to start tomorrow.

The deal would effectively mean a 16 per cent pay increase but would be staged over the next year and would be linked to cost-saving modernisation improvements.
