Matt Fish made his first Gillingham appearance since Boxing Day and turned in a display that delighted manager Andy Hessenthaler.

Injury and a lack of form have restricted Fish’s involvement with the Gills but he returned from a long injury lay-off to help his side to a clean sheet at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Hessenthaler said: "He has had a lot of injuries and he lacks a bit of confidence at times.

"I thought in his first game back, he was exceptional. Kaid Mohamed is a handful and then Jermaine McGlashan comes at you. They didn’t get any joy with him or Danny Jackman."

It was Fish’s 18th appearance for the Gills since joining from Dover in the summer.
