Agency in rallying cry to Kent’s future teachers

TEACHING training bosses are having a major recruitment drive to get more people into the profession.

Teachers and consultants are at the Train to Teach South East event today at the Science Museum in London to promote the teaching industry.

The event, which is also taking place tomorrow, aims to provide an insight into the rewards and challenges of teaching and allow visitors to apply for teacher training on the day.

Graham Holley, chief executive of the TDA said: "Unlike most day jobs, teaching offers huge variety, enables you to use a range of talents and skills, and provides the opportunity to work with some of the brightest young minds in our country.

"Our survey showed that 37 per cent of people in Kent think that teacher training can take four years or more, but in reality you could be in your dream career in a year if you’re a graduate.

"Visiting Train to Teach is one of the easiest ways of getting your foot in the door so I would urge people to get off the fence and get into London’s Science Museum."

A recent survey carried out by the Training and Development Agency, (TDA), revealed the following:

• One in five people in Kent daydream yet only four per cent are likely to apply for a teaching role

• 72 per cent under estimate by as much as £30,000 the salary that a teacher can earn.

• 28 per cent of people claim that ‘it’s too much effort

• 27 per cent say they are too busy

• Nine per cent of jobseeksers say that it won’t help them attract a partner

But

• 61 per cent said teaching was an opportunity to liberate themselves from the office desk

• 88 per cent said it made a difference to society

• 32 per cent said they could teach the subject they studied at school or university.

Entrance to the event tomorrow is free, and attendees can register in advance at www.tda.gov.uk or just come along. For more information about how to become a teacher see www.teach.gov.uk
