Former Charlton Athletic defender Chris Solly joins Ebbsfleet United in National League South

Former Charlton defender Chris Solly is looking to put himself in the shop window after signing for Ebbsfleet.

Solly played in the Championship last season but has been without a club since his Addicks contract expired.

The full-back started training with Fleet this week and has registered to play, with the aim of earning a Football League move in the January transfer window.

It’s an arrangement that suits the Fleet, with boss Dennis Kutrieb happy to offer the 29-year-old a place in his squad.

“We are really pleased to have Chris train with us and register to play,” Kutrieb told Fleet’s website.

“During this difficult summer market for so many players and clubs, we have had many approaches from players who wish to train and keep fit but we are a tight group and to bring in players on these terms, they need to be the right character and right example.

“Chris has been absolutely professional in his approach and honesty, he is a quality footballer from higher up the pyramid and we respect his willingness to be fit and ready should his next opportunity present itself.

"His commitment to Ebbsfleet United to be available and assist when needed is a great example for any player.”

Solly, who was born in north Kent, made more than 300 appearances for Charlton after making his debut in 2008/9.

He won a number of player-of-the-year awards and was a regular in the Addicks side who won the League 1 title under Chris Powell in 2011-12.

Solly spent the next four seasons in the Championship before relegation but earned a second promotion as Charlton beat Sunderland in the 2019 play-off final at Wembley.

He could make his debut when Ebbsfleet host Havant & Waterlooville tomorrow.
