Fleet sweat on in-form defender's fitness

ANKLE INJURY: Ross Smith
ANKLE INJURY: Ross Smith

Burton Albion v Gravesend & Northfleet

ROSS SMITH’S ankle injury stands between Gravesend manager Liam Daish naming an unchanged side for a third consecutive game when the Fleet make their debut at Burton’s new Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.

Daish, who is keen to keep a settled side as he pursues a fourth straight win, saw his best-laid plans disrupted when in-form Smith turned an ankle in training on Monday.

The Canadian-born central defender has proved a huge hit since his arrival as a trialist from Margate at the start of the season and is favourite to win the Player of the Year accolade.

Daish includes Richard Hodgson in Saturday’s squad after the 26-year-old midfielder made his Fleet debut as an 89th-minute substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 win against Morecambe.

Hodgson started his career with Nottingham Forest before going on to play for Scunthorpe, Darlington, Cambridge United, Farborough and Crawley.
