A SERIES of events will be taking place in Gravesend next month to celebrate the extraordinary life of Pocahontas.

Visitors from as far as America will be making a pilgrimage to St Georges’ Church to mark the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the statue of Pocahontas.

The statue which is a twin to the one founded in Jamestown, Virginia, was donated to Gravesham by the American town in 1958.

To celebrate this a weekend of celebrations will be held at the beginning of next month.

On Saturday, October 4, at 4pm, professor Helen Rountree, who is a world class expert on Pocahontas and the English settlers, will be giving a talk.

Gravesham Choral Society and the Pocahontas Performers will sing up a storm with a magical performance of well-known English, American and barbershop music at 6.30pm, followed by a meal for visitors at 7pm.

On Sunday, October 5 at 10am, a special free commemorative service will take place, followed by a community 'bring and share’ lunch at noon.

All celebratory events are being held at the historical venue in Church Street.
