A 21-year-old woman taken to hospital after her car smashed into a lamppost on one of Kent's busiest roads has serious injuries but they are not life-threatening.

The woman had to be cut free from her black Ford Fiesta by firefighters following the crash on the A2 at Gravesend at about 11.30am on Sunday.

The woman was taken by Kent Air Ambulance to Maidstone Hospital with leg, arm, chest and possible head injuries. She underwent surgery later the same day.

Traffic was gridlocked for around four hours. Kent Police said that no other vehicle was involved in the crash.
