10 graves targeted by vandals

VANDALS have caused damage to around 10 graves at a cemetery in Old Road West at Gravesend. A number of stone and marble urns have been smashed.

The damage was reported on Friday, June 22, but it is thought it may have happened during the same weekend as vandalism to graves and stained glass windows in the chapel at the cemetery in Springhead Road, Northfleet, between June 15 and June 18.

This latest spate of damage has left an estimated £1,000 clean-up bill.

The cemetery is owned by Gravesham Borough Council. Leader, Cllr David Turner said: “These attacks are abhorrent and have no place in any community. We will continue to work with the police to ensure the guilty parties are identified and arrested.

“I hope anyone who has information will come forward immediately so that together we can put an end to these distressing crimes.”

Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed people acting suspiciously in the area over that weekend.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dartford police station on 01322 283096 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555111.
