Man hit by bus in Folkestone's Tontine Street

A man was hit by a double-decker bus whilst walking in Folkestone this morning.

He only suffered minor injuries after the incident on Tontine Street at 8.15am but an ambulance crew was called to check on the man.

Police were also called to the crash at the bottom of The Old High Street but the road was not closed.

Stagecoach has confirmed one its buses was "involved in an incident involving a pedestrian".

Spokesman Matthew Maytum said: "Safety is our absolute priority and our thoughts are for the well-being of the man involved. We're currently reviewing CCTV footage from the bus to establish exactly what happened."

A spokesman for police said: "Police were called to a road traffic collision involving a double decker bus and a pedestrian in Tontine Street, Folkestone.

"The pedestrian suffered minor injuries. He did not go to hospital. The road was not closed."

Businesses were up in arms and opponents warned about potential danger to people when proposals were put forward to make the street two-way for buses and taxis.

The scheme was implemented in May and near misses have already been reported.

Shepway's Joint Transportation Board (JTB), which approved the new system, heard about an incident when a bus was forced to mount the kerb when two buses came face-to-face with each other at the pinch point by the Tram Road car park.

It was also reported the bus narrowly missed two pedestrians walking along the pavement.

Cllr Mary Lawes said she contacted the police and Stagecoach at the time to launch an investigation.

JTB member Cllr Rory Love asked the board's meeting earlier this month for confirmation about who is responsible for managing the contraflow system.
