Whitfield residents are taking a stand against housing development in Singledge Lane

Residents in Whitfield are making a stand against a developers’ plan to build 135 homes next to a narrow lane.

A group who live in Singledge Lane are opposing Abbey Developments’ proposal for homes which would mean increased traffic on a narrow, single track lane.

Sally Chamberlain, who has lived there for two years, said not only would this be right next to her house but would also make the road unsafe.

She said: “I am horrified to discover that Abbey Homes propose a new development in Whitfield, the entrance and exit of which will be directly onto Singledge Lane.

“I haven’t met anyone who is supporting it. It’s just not wide enough to support a lot of extra cars and the pressure it will put on the junction at the A2.

“If DDC approve this plan then as for as I’m concerned they will lose all credibility.”

"The developer is trying to jump the gun – the development without the new road would be irresponsible and I hope Dover District Council will reject it...” - Charlie Elphicke MP

A planning application has not yet been submitted to Dover District Council but is expected within the month.

Ms Chamberlain said the development should not be given the go ahead without a new, wider road being put in.

She said: “The Whitfield development plan clearly states it should be the last part of the Whitfield development, as they are planning to put a new roundabout on the A2 eventually.”

The master plan drawn up in 2011 stated that this area should be the last of many developments in Whitfield. Ms Chamberlain claims this would give the council and developer time to put the right infrastructure in place.

She says sewerage and flooding is an issue as well as the small access road which would be completely blocked during construction and put under pressure once the new residents move in.

The MP for Deal and Dover, Charlie Elphicke, said developers are “jumping the gun”.

He said: “Residents of Singledge Lane in Whitfield rightly say their narrow single track lane is unsuitable for proposed nearby large development of hundreds of houses.

“A new road is proposed for Whitfield. The proposed development should open into that new road. The developer is trying to jump the gun – the development without the new road would be irresponsible and I hope Dover District Council will reject it.”
