Coastguard brings 34 children to safety

DOVER Coastguard co-ordinated a series of rescues along the south east coast yesterday when 34 children were reunited with their respective parents.

The children, ranging in age from three to 12 years, all got into difficulties at Camber Sands beach, just over the county boundary with East Sussex.

Coastguards from Rye Bay, Hastings and Dungeness and lifeboats from Rye, Dungeness and Pett Level were called out.

Some of the children had floated off in inflatable vessels across the entrance to Rye port, and all heading towards Greatstone in a 25 knot north easterly wind which had earlier been forecast by the Met office.
