Ex-head teacher in Deal, Jon Fox and his wife Fiona

A former Deal head teacher is setting up an independent drama school designed around the national curriculum.

Jon Fox, 45, and his wife, Fiona, an artist, have made their dream of 25 years a reality after creating the plan just two months ago.

The move comes nearly two years after Mr Fox and two others presented plans to set up a faith-based free school for the former Walmer Science College plot.

This idea has since been dropped.

The Fox School of Acting in Almond House, Betteshanger Road, houses a large studio and conference room where classes will be held.

Mr Fox has secured industry professionals and teachers within the performing arts sector to teach children and adults.

The sessions, which are flexible depending on people’s commitments, are predominantly drama-based, but they include singing and dancing.

Mr Fox, who has spent 27 years as a teacher, wanted to step away from state and private schools and develop his own venue.

He said: “I have always loved mentoring students and teachers.

“I needed to continue something that really helped people but isn’t as constrained as the bureaucracy of a government establishment.”

The courses will help a variety of people, from home-schooled pupils to adults, and some classes have been put on to give extra tutoring for GCSE and A-level studies.

“I am trying to engage with as many different groups of the community as I can,” he said.

“I am both scared and excited. I don’t think I have felt so alive in 20 years, to be honest.

“There comes a point in your life where you say, ‘I am going to give this a go’.”

To see what it’s all about, the school will be opening its doors on Saturday, March 5, at 10am.

People will be able to speak to Mr Fox and some of the teachers throughout the day and there will also be a buffet.
