Demolition work being investigated

Council officials are investigating demolition work which is taking place on a Dover estate.

They were called in by town councillor Chris Precious who said he was concerned about a group of four people working on the St Giles Cottage site, between St Giles Close and St David's Avenue, at Aycliffe.

He said the cottage was being dismantled and fully-grown mature trees were being cut down.

He also expressed concern about rubbish being burnt on the site, and said fire-fighters had been called.

"The fire brigade declared the whole site to be unsafe and a danger to children," he said.

"The site is open with no fencing in place and yet littered with broken timber, broken furniture and other hazardous objects."

Cllr Precious, who said he had also contacted the Health and Safety Executive, gave the council details of the vehicle the workmen were using.

District Councillor Nigel Collor said planning enforcement officers from the council were investigating the work.

No work was taking place there today.
