Investigation launched after pensioner injured

A pensioner is in hospital after a metal delivery cage fell on her while she waited for a bus.

The woman, who is though to be in her 70s and from Darenth, was heading to the bus stops in Market Street, Dartford, when the 6ft cage toppled over onto her.

It was one of several being unloaded from an Argos delivery lorry for the Lowfield Street store.

The woman was rushed to Darent Valley Hospital following the incident, at about 10.30am on Friday, but has since been transferred to Queen Victoria Hospital, in East Grinstead, West Sussex for further treatment.

Tarkan Enver (corr), a sales manager at Market Street estate agents Ward and Partners saw the incident unfold.

He said: “I heard a great big bang and all I saw was a guy jumping out the lorry and then the cage on top of her. All I’ve seen was her legs sticking out so I’ve put the phone down, grabbed some towels and ran out there.”

Mr Enver said both the woman’s leg and head were bleeding heavily.

He stayed with her until an ambulance arrived and has since been to visit her in hospital.

He added: “I went to visit the lady in hospital the next day because I was really concerned for her and spoke to her family.”

A spokesman for Argos said the firm had notified Dartford council of the incident and was working with it to resolve any health and safety implications.

He added: “We would like the express our concern for the well being and recovery of the lady who is being treated in hospital.

“Argos takes health and safety issues very seriously and has already launched an internal investigation.”

Health and safety officers from the council were at the scene on Monday, but the Health and Safety Executive, which investigates workplace accidents, is not involved.
