Fire destroys hay barn

Firefighters are still tackling a blaze at a farm which has destroyed a barn full of hay and straw.

At the height of the fire four appliances from Dartford, Thamesside and Maidstone were at the scene.

Sixteen hours after the fire was first reported two fire engines are still at Old Mill Farm, Darenth, Kent Fire and Rescue Service confirmed this afternoon.

The 40 metres by 20 metres barn was well alight by the time the first fire crews arrived at the scene. It weas completely destroyed.

The cause of the fire is not known, but comes at the height of the mowing season.

The farm has been run by George North for more than 25 years.

It is a livestock farm.

No one was available from the farm to speak.
