A spokesman said: "We're responding to reports of a burst water main in Greenhithe on the London Road outside McDonald’s.

"Finding and fixing leaks is a top priority and our engineers will carry out the repair from 8pm this evening.

"The team will put appropriate traffic management protocols in place, to minimise any disruption to motorists. We ‘d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time.”

Cllr Peter Harman, who is part of the Swanscombe and Greenhithe Residents' Association, has said that there "is not too much of a leak at the moment."

However, he added: "It has the potential to get much worse for the evening rush hour tonight.

"Thames Water have agreed a plan to fix it with the minimum possible disruption, but it is bound to cause some delays. Best avoided if you can."
