Mixed weekend for hockey club

HAT-TRICK: A Dave Mathews treble wasn't enough for Canterbury men
HAT-TRICK: A Dave Mathews treble wasn't enough for Canterbury men

Canterbury 4 Reading 7; Sutton Coldfield Ladies 1 Canterbury Ladies 7

CANTERBURY were unable to hold the Slazenger English League leaders after giving themselves the upper hand in Saturday’s contest at Polo Farm.

Tired legs were evident as once again Canterbury faltered in the latter stage to hand Reading a flattering scoreline and do nothing to help the home side’s fight against the drop.

Dave Mathews put the home side ahead before going onto complete a hat-trick, while Greg Nicol also netted.

Meanwhile, Canterbury Ladies maintained the pressure at the top of the Slazenger National League with an emphatic win at Sutton Coldfield.

Goals from Kirsty Chambers, Cathy Gilliat-Smith, Mel Clewlow (two), Susannah Townsend (two) and Nikki Triggs contributed to an impressive 7-1 scoreline.
