Boom Battle Bar at Riverside in Canterbury serves raw chicken burger to teen celebrating birthday

Kitchen staff at a new Kent bar have been given extra training after a diner tucked into a “dangerously raw” chicken burger.

The unsightly meal was dished up at Boom Battle Bar in Canterbury to a family hoping to enjoy a birthday meal.

But Max Arter says his brother, who was celebrating turning 19, was given an unwelcome present after biting into the uncooked meat.

The 21-year-old from Ashford shared a video of the pink chicken on TikTok, with the clip watched almost two million times.

Mr Arter said: “My brother took about two bites.

“It was the texture, he could tell straight away – it was medium rare.

“Salmonella can be fatal; fortunately it wasn’t this time. But it kind of ruined his birthday and his New Year’s Eve.

“We weren’t even offered the refund for the chicken burger - we had to go up and chase them.”

Mr Arter says a manager at the venue, which opened on the Riverside complex in September, told them the error was down to the use of a new meat probe that had yet to be configured properly.

The family was given a free round of drinks to make amends, but pub supervisor Mr Arter remained unsatisfied with the response.

“Having worked in a pub, you do try and do everything you can to prevent this from happening, but this was dangerously raw,” he said.

“I said I reckon we should put it on social media because these kinds of things can’t be happening.

“We were accused of making the team cry as apparently people have come in and had a go at the staff because of the video but I don’t see how it’s our problem at all.

“We don’t want it to happen to other people - this really could have hurt someone and done a lot more damage than it did.”

A Boom Battle Bar spokesperson told KentOnline: “We pride ourselves on the quality of delivery for any item on our menu and are aware that the incident in Canterbury Boom Battle Bar delivered a customer experience below the high standards that we set ourselves.

“To make sure this never occurs again the kitchen team have renewed their training to above industry levels and the menu item concerned has been amended in its specification to eliminate future risk of human error.

“We are just as disappointed as our customer in the quality they received and are committed to making sure this remains a one-off occasion.”
