Armed police swoop on Canterbury after man 'threatened with gun'

Armed police swooped on a residential area after a man was reportedly threatened with a gun.

The incident allegedly happened in Cornwall Gardens, Canterbury.

Police rushed to the scene and carried out inquiries in the area, before broadening the operation to the Sturry Road part of the city.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing armed police and emergency response vehicles near Asda in Sturry Road at about 6pm last night.

Police have today confirmed a 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm.

A spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to a report of a man making threats towards another person known to him in Cornwall Gardens at 6pm.

"Officers attended and, following inquiries in the area, a man from Canterbury was arrested and taken into custody."

Police say a BB-gun was recovered from the scene.

Officers remained in the Cornwall Gardens area this morning, carrying out inquiries.

The man arrested remains in custody.
