The long-running saga over the ownership of Homelands and Ashford United Football Club has taken a new dramatic twist after Tony Betteridge confirmed he is no longer involved.

Mr Betteridge revealed the news in a statement on Friday, following a lengthy legal battle with former fellow director Don Crosbie, which has continued since the two men fell out four years ago.

He said: “The freehold of the Homelands and, as a going concern, the business of Homelands Enterprises (Kent) Ltd has been sold to the ATFC Supporters & Members Club Ltd owned by Mrs Jean Crosbie, wife of Mr Crosbie.

“I have signed the final papers this morning therefore, I will no longer be involved with either the club or it’s business.”

The new owners issued a short statement on Wednesday, saying: "“The Crosbie family intends to take the club forward by reverting to the original intention of obtaining enabling development, via the wrap around stadium plans (for a new sports village) drawn up over six years ago.

“No further comment will be issued at this time. A formal statement will be issued in due course.”

In a farewell message to the club’s officials and supporters, Mr Betteridge added: “I must thank all the people who I have met since my introduction to the club seven or eight years ago, it has been an emotional experience.

“They include the Football Committee who have been, generous, honest, passionate, true, steadfast and resolute.

“I also have to thank the management team of Paul Chambers, John Ovard and physio Alan Orsbourne and players, past and present, all of whom I have nothing but gratitude and admiration.

“There is not a single person or a single experience that I would change.

“It has been both a privilege and a pleasure which has enriched and made me a fuller person than I would be now.”

Mr Betteridge was unavailable for comment when contacted this week following the release of his statement.
