Man threatens to set fire to himself

A 58-year-old man doused himself in petrol and threatened to set himself on fire.

Police were called to East Stour Court, off Mabledon Avenue, Ashford, at 10.40pm on Saturday by a member of the public.

Kent Fire and Rescue crews were also called and met with police at the Jet garage on the Hythe Road.

The road was closed temporarily while police negotiated with the man, who was outside the building and smelled of petrol.

A police woman persuaded the man to stay outside and also stopped him from setting fire to himself.

He was eventually talked out of danger and was taken to the William Harvey Hospital suffering from hypothermia and skin contact with petrol.
