Catherine Spencer has stood down as England rugby captain on the eve of the new international series.

Spencer, from Folkestone, led her country to the 2010 Women’s World Cup final and has skippered the side for the past three seasons.

She will remain with the England Elite squad and plans to be involved in next month’s RBS 6 Nations championships.

She said: "My decision to stand down as England captain has, without doubt, been one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.

"I am determined to keep playing for England and to perform to the best of my abilities."
