Author to visit steam railway's 1940s weekend

A wartime evacuee who has written a book about his experiences will attend the 1940s weekend at the Kent & East Sussex Railway.

Richard Holdsworth will be signing copies of his book, Six Spoons of Sugar, when he visits the Tenterden-based railway, which is hosting the nostalgic journey back in time with people in costumes, entertainment and of course, steam trains on Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17.
Mr Holdsworth’s book - the title of which refers to the wartime rationing allocation - tells his story of a young boy who was uprooted from a cosy life in South London and sent to the country.
The book details the trauma of having his father arrested on suspicion of being a spy, his grandmother’s death during the Blitz and how Richard and his mother were caught in a raid in February 1943.
Mr Holdsworth said: “When war broke out, my teacher encouraged us kids to compile a scrapbook telling the war as it unfolded.
“I crammed mine with as many facts and figures as I could, using cuttings from my dad’s newspaper, from BBC news broadcasts and pictures from wherever I could scrounge them.
“I’ve included as many as I can in Six Spoons of Sugar.”
Mr Holdsworth will be at the railway, 10am to 5pm, each day.
